Second Harvest Foodbank

Last Saturday a few us ventured over to the Second Harvest Food Bank to help them sort donated goods for needy families around Orlando. This is the third time we’ve helped out at this particular food bank, something not uncommon for secular groups in town. It felt really nice being able to give back to the community, especially with the holidays coming up. Interestingly enough, they informed us that the food we sorted that day has only a three day turnaround before it actually ends up on tables of families! Pretty cool stuff. :-)

If you’re interested in volunteering with us in the future stay tuned to our public Facebook page or contact us!

Our first speaker – Teresa MacBain!

Teresa MacBain

We will be hosting Teresa MacBain when she comes to Orlando to speak on Saturday, July 14th.

Teresa was raised in a fundamental Baptist home as the daughter of a pastor. She then followed in her father’s footsteps, serving in ministry for over 20 years. Her questioning began in her early teens but was suppressed for many years. Ultimately, the questions led her to walk away from her faith in 2011. She “came out” at the 2012 American Atheist Convention in Washington, D.C. Her coming out made headlines nationwide on CNN and NPR. She is now the Executive Director of the Clergy Project.

Executive Board Meeting 4/22/12 Topics

Summer meetings: We will likely be continuing to meet at 7:00 PM on Wednesday nights over the summer. We will attempt to reserve a room in Classroom building 1 for said meetings.

Orientation Ice cream socials: We will be participating in them, 2 members will hopefully attend each meeting. The socials take place on the following dates: May: 21st, 24th, 30th. June: 4th, 7th, 11th, 13th, 18th, 21st, 27th. July: 9th, 11th, 16th, 18th, 23rd. August: 15th.

Dues: Dues will likely be set at 5$ per semester, possibly with a discount on a shirt given if one pays $10 at once for the year.

Project Reason: One of our main initiatives for the summer is Project Reason. We will be creating a video for this competition, and encourage anyone interested in helping to let us know. Details in the following link: http://www.project-reason.org/contests/2012_video_contest/

Charity event: We would like to organize a charity event this year. Potential ideas include a streaming event online, and water balloon an atheist day. For this second one, $1 could be paid to pelt one of us with a water balloon.

Woman in secularism conference: A group donated money so that 25 students could each go for $25. These are sold out, but may be reopening. If we can get said tickets, we may go: http://www.centerforinquiry.net/events/women_in_secularism

Teresa Mcbain: We’ve been talking to the regional directors of the Florida atheists, they are looking for venues for speaker tours, so we may try to get involved with that. We may be able to get Teresa Mcbain as a speaker with tentative date of mid July.

External duties of executive board: Were discussed and clarified.

Discussion question: The possibility of having people vote each week on the potential discussion question was discussed. Calendar: a Google calendar will be implemented on the website: www.ssaucf.com

Joint events: We would like to start organizing joint events with other clubs, such as amnesty international and the college democrats. Humanist issues would be a great common ground for this.

T-shirts: This summer we may be putting together a t-shirt committee, separate from the executive board. With the goal of having t-shirts ready by the end of summer.

Secretive involvement: For those who wish their involvement in this club to be a secret, future attendance sheets will have a check off box for this. This way we can be sure to not accidentally tag you in any pictures, etc. that we post.

American Atheist Convention: We could potentially go to this on March 25th.

Deconversion video series: We would like to, beginning this summer, take videos of people stories of how they became Atheist/agnostic/irreligious, as well as their reasoning for it. These videos would be posted to a youtube page we’d be starting, as well as onto our site: www.SSAUCF.com.

If you have any questions on these matters please email me at cmcaliley@knights.ucf.edu, or message me (Collin McAliley) on facebook.

We’re now an RSO!

Hey everyone! The Secular Student Alliance at UCF is now an OFFICIAL Registered Student Organization!

Beginning in the Fall 2012 semester we will be able to reserve a room to call our own for weekly meetings.

A great thanks to each and every person that has shown up to meetings the last few months! Your support has been invaluable. And I would also like to encourage everyone who cannot make it out to meetings to keep an eye on our Facebook page for exiting events or other things that maybe you can be involved with.

Just a reminder: tomorrow a bunch of us will be heading over to Winter Park to participate in an Orlando Freethinkers and Humanists event entitled: “Liz Murad: My Conversion From ‘Life in the Convent’ to Secular Humanism”. Check out the Facebook event page for more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/244804135617288/ (Also, there will be a lot more people in attendance than those RSVP’d on the FB page – that only includes SSA members right now)

Additionally, next Wednesday (April 18th) is another movie night, which will take place after our regularly scheduled meeting on campus. We’ll be screening Louis Theroux’s “The Most Hated Family In America”.

I hope to see you all there!
